                                          Petite Forte

Petite Forte was once an isolated community in Placentia Bay. It is a community that resisted pressure for resettlement during the Smallwood governments of the sixties and seventies, a testament to the fact that it was such a close-knit community. Through the persistence and hard work of the people and a belief in themselves they were able to finally convince the government that a road was needed. As a result, in 1992 they were connected to the Burin Peninsula highway, which also gave them access to the Southeast Bight/Little Paradise Ferry, as well as to the provincial capital. The provincial government announced in 2004 that the remaining portion of this road would soon be paved.
