Welcome to VirginiaHouston.com. (Newfoundland Art)

The most praiseworthy form of painting is the one that most resembles what it imitates. ~Leonardo da Vinci

I received a letter from the Professional Living Artists of Nova Scotia (PLANS) informing me that my artworks have been accepted for participation in the realist exhibition taking place January 17th, 2014 at the Dalhousie Art Gallery. It’s so exciting to be one of the 43 out of 112 artists who will receive studio visits this summer by Tom Smart. This exhibition is being initiated by Tom Smart (author, art gallery director, curator, columnist, and special advisor to art galleries and museums) in consultation with Peter Dykhuis, director/curator of Dalhousie Art Gallery.

“PLANS EXHIBITION THEME : Over the past five decades, Realism in painting has been an important expressive mode for artists on the east coast of Canada, particularly in Nova Scotia. A significant aspect of the Province’s artistic identity is linked with artists who have found a potent voice by adapting the conventions associated with Realism. This exhibition seeks to provide a revitalised definition of the Realism practised in Nova Scotia. By surveying the current work of selected Nova Scotian artists, the curators will provide a framework for understanding how and why the mode continues to resonate so widely.”
