Quirpon is located on the extreme north-eastern tip of the Great Northern Peninsula, just a mere five kilometers from the famous Viking settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows (a designated World Heritage site). It was within the boundary of the “French Shore” from 1713 to 1904 and was therefore the site of French Shore fishing activities.
This painting depicts the plant owned by Gordon Pew Co. and the premises of Levi Davis. Two Carbonear fishermen are in the boat. Today, many areas of Quirpon (pronounced locally as KAR-POON) remain essentially unchanged from earlier times. Both the celebrated book and film, The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx have a direct connection to Quirpon Island, where some of the filming took place. The Quirpon area is also one of the best locations for viewing icebergs in the province. Many bird and whale species are common in the area.
