VIRGINIA HOUSTON ART CONTEST FOR CHILDREN (2008)
Virginia Houston Art is pleased to announce an art contest for children aged 12 years and under. This contest will give students a chance to display their talents to the world, and to encourage them to use their God-given talents for good, not evil, and to help positively shape their futures. Studies have shown a strong relationship between learning in the arts and fundamental cognitive skills used in mastering reading, writing and mathematics. Art also nurtures social interaction skills. We need to encourage and support the wealth of talent in our "right brain" thinkers.
Artwork must be entered by November 30, 2008. Only one entry can be submitted per child. Winning artworks will be judged by December 12 and will be featured on this website for one year. These artworks will also be displayed in a new artbook (by Virginia Houston) on art lessons for children. (Title not yet chosen)
You may send original work but it will not be returned. Preference is for a photocopy of your artwork or if entering online send a digital copy (jpeg) at least 300 dpi's and at least 4 inches by 5 inches, in colour.
There will be three winners as well as some honourable mentions. First prize is for $100.00. Second prize is for $50.00 and third prize is for $25.00. Winners will be notified by December 15, and their names will be displayed on this website (www.virginiahouston.com).

What Your Drawing Is About (WORD COMBINATIONS)
Your drawing has to be very creative. Think about unique combinations of words, or actual word combinations such as horsefly. A horsefly is an actual word but separate the two words and put a horse with fly and you can come up with your own interpretation of horse fly, eg. a horse that flies, or a fly with a horse's head, etc. Some other examples are: tiger lily, pineapple, water fowl, dogwood, pussywillow, crabapples, ceel phone, snap dragon, mouse pad, fish hawk, fire bug. Feel free to come up with your own combinations.
Draw your concept of these two or three word combinations on your paper. Fill the entire sheet with your drawing. Incorporporate a background for your drawing or painting; think about where you would find such a plant, animal or whatever you draw.
